want to know something about me? The coolest the new MINI has ever been to me is the remake of the Italian job with the supercharged S. It’ s been downhill from there and it wasn’t all that high to start with.

There's truth in that. Those original supercharged ones were arguably the pinacle, but they were better than you give them credit for, in my opinion.

That car is the automobile equivalent of this:
I got to drive the first generation JCW. What a riot. It pops and backfires like an drunk American celebrating July 4th with a crate full of illegal fireworks.
All cars should be that joyous and ridiculous to drive.

Absurdly rare.
I fundamentally really really dislike that car though.
Like....they took something kinda good and totally and completely focused it towards one task. Notably a task (going fast around a racetrack) that i’m in favor of and really like.
In a vacuum? Pretty cool.
In reality? You have a very expensive, not hugely fast car that is utterly hamstrung by its fundamental design (FWD hatchback.)
Its basically lost all of the practicality of that setup (goodbye back seats, goodbye trunk space) while adding a bunch of grip and grunt....but not enough grip and grunt to make it actually line up well with other performance cars at that price point.
It went from doing two things reasonably well, to doing one thing a tiny bit better, while not being able to do the other thing.
Which, at the end of the day leaves me really disliking them.....while still actually thinking they’re pretty cool somehow.
